What is Pet Insurance For?

Just like humans, pets also need health coverage. Whether it’s an unexpected illness, injury, or routine procedure, vet bills can add up fast.

Pet Insurance helps cover:

  • Outpatient consultations and medical expenses
  • Lab tests and surgical costs
  • Third-party liability (e.g., if your dog injures someone or goes missing)

Kwiksure’s experts are here to guide you through the options and help you find the plan that fits your pet’s needs–and your peace of mind.

How Much Does Pet Insurance Cost?

The premium for pet insurance depends on the pet's breed, age at the time of insurance, medical history, and physical condition, as well as the coverage provided by the selected plan.

Most pet insurance policies on the market are primarily for pets aged 6 months to 8 years (at the time coverage begins), with a minimum age limit ranging from 8 weeks to 6 months. While some insurance plans do not impose age limits, most set an upper limit at 11 to 13 years when coverage begins. Generally, as pets age, the insurance premiums also gradually rise, with extra charges for older cats and dogs aged 9 years or above. Monthly premiums for basic plans for puppies and kittens (under 6 months) range from HKD $253 to $312, while the monthly premiums for older pets (9 years or above) range from HKD $455 to $561.

Things to Consider When Buying Pet Insurance

Choosing the right pet insurance plan can make a big difference in your pet’s health and your peace of mind. Here are key factors to keep in mind before you commit:

1. Coverage Limits & Exclusions

  • Look beyond the total coverage amount–check for item-specific limits and excluded conditions
  • Some plans include coinsurance, meaning you’ll pay a percentage of costs based on your pet’s age when coverage starts.
  • Always read the fine print to understand what’s covered and what’s not.

2. Renewal Age Restrictions

  • Most insurers allow renewals up to age 13.
  • Pets older than 13 may require underwriting approval, which may involve additional costs or more stringent conditions.
  • Consider your pet’s age at enrollment and how long you plan to keep the coverage.

3. No-Claims Discount

  • If you don’t make any claims for a set period, you may qualify for a renewal discount.
  • These discounts reward responsible pet owners and can help lower your premiums.
